The 10 best WWE Velocity Matches You Shouldn’t Have Missed

WWE.com posted a new article entitled “The 10 Best WWE Velocity Matches You SHouldn’t Have Missed,” where, well, they take a look at the best Velocity matches that we shouldn’t have missed. Velocity was a cyber show available to watch on WWE.com in the early 2000s, where Rey had a bunch of matches. In the top 10, our Ultimate Underdog had two of the best matches and even won first place for his match against Jamie Noble. Read what WWE.com posted below and also check out the photos of Rey from Velocity by clicking the link below.

#4 Rey Mysterio vs. Kidman vs. Nunzio vs. Akio – April 10, 2004
WWE Velocity’s one-on-one cruiserweight bouts were high-octane affairs. The thought of a Fatal Four Way Match, with an opportunity at the Cruiserweight Title on the line, probably blew the collective minds of the WWE Universe.

The bout was frenetic from the get-go. Mysterio gained an early advantage and almost nailed Akio with the 619, but was cut off by Kidman. The four Superstars traded high-impact maneuvers back and forth, going for quick covers, with no one finding success.

Unsurprisingly, the match moved outside the ring fairly quickly. In rapid succession, Akio hit a corkscrew dive, Mysterio springboarded onto his foes, followed by Nunzio crashing and burning on an attempted dive when everyone moved out of his way. The tenacious Italian grappler recovered, though, catching Kidman with a devastating DDT off the top rope to earn the title opportunity.

#1 Rey Mysterio vs. Jamie Noble – May 1, 2004
WWE Velocity was often a showcase for SmackDown’s Cruiserweight division. There was no better example of this than when Rey Mysterio took on Jamie Noble in May 2004.

Noble did everything he could to keep The Master of The 619 grounded, utilizing a plethora of holds and grappling techniques. Mysterio, though, showed off his unparalleled speed, using it to slip out of Noble’s grasp. Rey’s offense would be short-lived, ending when Noble contorted his body into a unique position, resulting in a maneuver that nearly snapped Mysterio’s arm.

Noble continued working over Rey’s injured limb, ultimately trying to end the bout with an armbar. Mysterio valiantly fought out, though Noble was still on the offensive. The masked marvel, however, was able to reverse Noble’s Tiger Bomb attempt, leaving his foe in perfect position for the 619. Picking up the victory was academic for Mysterio after that. The WWE Universe was on its feet screaming as he covered Noble for the three count.

Kurt Angle defeated Rey Mysterio VIA Countout
View: June 02, 2006 SCREENCAPTURES | June 02, 2006 DIGITALS

SmackDown! opens up with Kurt Angle making his away down the ring to a loud roar of boos from the crowd. Shortly after, World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio’s music hits the arena and the crowd goes nuts! Rey walks down the ramp greeting fans and showing off his beloved Heavyweight TItle. Rey enters the ring and the bell rings as the men circle each other in the middle of the ring. Kurt quickly goes after Rey with a double legged take down and hits his head a few times to mess him up. However, Rey makes it right back up to his feet only for the men to stare at eachother again.

Kurt takes Rey down again and slaps him silly, again, only for Rey to stand back up shortly after. Then, Kurt charges into Rey and takes him down immediately. Rey gets back up and then Kurt takes Rey down once again. Kurt looks as if he wants to set up his Ankle Lock but Rey makes it to the ropes first. Kurt goes after Rey again but Rey counters back with head scissors, sending Kurt across the ring and the crowd goes nuts! Kurt then charges after Rey’s left leg, but Rey kicks him away and quickly stands up! Kurt sends Rey into the corner but as he’s ready to charge into him, Rey moves out of the way and sends Kurt shoulder first into the turnbuckle! Rey climbs the ropes and punches Kurt in the head until Kurt grabs Rey and slams him into the mat.

Kurt goes for the Angle Slam, but Rey counters with an arm drag and sends Kurt out of the ring. Rey goes for a Seated Senton from the apron, but Kurt moves out of the way. Both men get back in the ring and stare at each other, toe to toe! Kurt takes control of the match now and even gets Rey in a submissive move. Rey fights out of the hold and as he uses the ropes for momentum, Kurt takes Rey out with a knee to the abdomen. Kurt lands a german suplex and goes for a pin but Rye kicks out. Once again, Kurt goes for a submissive move against Rey in the middle of the ring. Again, Rey fights through with some nice kicks to Kurt followed by a drop kick to Angle’s face! Kurt grabs a hold of Rey on top of his shoulder, but Rey reverses him into a DDT! Rey lands a few kicks to Angle as well as a beautiful tilt-o-whirl headscissors! Rey goes for a cover, but Kurt kicks out at 2.

Rey lands a drop toehold on Angle, as Angle’s head hits a corner turn buckle. Rey then kicks Angle and connects nicely with the back of Kurt’s head! Kurt lands outside of the ring, where Rey goes for a baseball slide from the inside of the ring to head scissors, sending Kurt flying! Rey sends Kurt into the ring and climbs on the top rope for a Seated Senton! Rey goes for a pin but Kurt kicks out of two and reverses Rey for his own pin, but Rey also kicks out at two! Kurt lands a german suplex again and goes for a cover once more on Rey, but Rey kicks out. After both men move around the ring a little, Rey rolls up Kurt for a pin! However, Kurt kicks out at two. Rey gets up but Kurt lands a mean clothesline and signals that he’s ready to take Rey out. Kurt lands his angle slam but as he goes to pin Rey, Rey puts his foot on the bottome rope!

Kurt goes for the angle slam again, but in the middle of the ring instead. However, Rey counters and sends Kurt flying onto the second rope! The crowd explodes as Rey whips himself across the ring and connects with the 619! Rey moves slowly as Kurt is still down, he goes for the top rope but Kurt makes his way up to try and take Kurt down. Rey wants to go for a sunset flip but Kurt holds on! Rey kicks Kurt and gets the sunset flip now, but Kurt rolls through and goes for Rey’s ankle. Angle locks it in, but Rey reverses and sends Angle onto the second rope again! Kurt catches Rey but Rey rolls up Kurt into a pin which Kurt kicks out of! Kurt then sends Rey flying over the top rope!! Rey makes it into the ring right as the referee hits #10. Rey loses the match due to a count out… After the match, Kurt goes to shake Rey’s hand and hands Rey his title. Kurt then gives Rey a hug before he leaves the ring.

The 20 Most Amazing Masked Wrestlers

WWE.com recently posted a brand new article today entitled “The 20 Most Amazing Masked Wrestlers,” where they look at, well, the 20 most amazing masked wrestlers. Of course Rey Mysterio was featured, making it to #2, only 1 spot short of being #1 (which belongs to the legendary Mil Mascaras). Make sure to read the blurb they wrote about Rey and check out the AWESOME new shots of Rey that WWE shared with the blurbs too!

#2 – Rey Mysterio
No mask in this world is as universally recognizable as the one made famous by “The King of Mystery.” The story of Rey Mysterio encapsulates one of the truest tenets of lucha libre: the tradition of honoring warriors who came before. In the case of the three-time World Champion, his name and elements of his mask design were derived from his uncle and trainer, Rey Mysterio Sr. Yet The Master of the 619 has never allowed his appearance to grow stale: Over the course of his career, Mysterio has continuously evolved the design, having worn literally hundreds — if not thousands — of variations.

That’s to say nothing of Mysterio’s in-ring legacy. “Revolutionary” only begins to describe his effect. The Ultimate Underdog broke new ground in the ring, to the awe of the WWE Universe, and he’s served as an inspiration for undersized athletes everywhere, proving it’s the size of the fight in the dog that matters most.
