Rey Mysterio, A Paul Heyman Guy? “13 Paul Heyman Guys”

Rey Mysterio, a Paul Heyman guy? Yes! It’s true! Back in the mid 90s, Rey Mysterio used to work for Paul Heyman in ECW and was a Paul Heyman guy! In an article WWE.com and Paul Heyman wrote, they look back at 13 guys that Paul Heyman considered to be “his” guys. This is what he had to say about Rey:

In 1995, the landscape of sports-entertainment in the United States was dramatically different. No one of Rey Mysterio’s size or aerial ability had ever been featured in this country. The highest flier Americans had seen up until that point was “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka, and the most famous luchador was Mil Mascaras, who really never left his feet except for a bodypress off the top rope.

When ECW suffered a dramatic talent raid at the hands of WCW, many thought it could have been the death of our company. Our backs were against the wall. How could Extreme Championship Wrestling come back from a devastating blow? I knew our only hope was to come out blasting and make the next major show even better than anything anyone had ever seen before. We literally had to show the world we were still the innovators of new styles. Groundbreaking concepts were used on TV, unmatched ferocity was presented on the mic and the most cutting-edge style was presented in the ring.

I reached out to Konnan in Mexico, and without hesitation, he sent Rey Mysterio and Psicosis to South Philly for the next ECW Arena show. Konnan guaranteed me their matches would not only be state of the art, but also that nothing could match Rey vs. Psicosis in the United States. The ECW audience, which lived by the philosophy of “accentuate the strengths and hide the weaknesses,” never paid attention to the fact that Rey Mysterio wasn’t a bodybuilder, or 6-feet tall, or 300 pounds. The ECW audience saw a magnificent performer the likes of which the United States had never seen. Mysterio not only lived up to my expectations, but he also single-handedly opened up the U.S. market to the concept of cruiserweights. And he turned one of ECW’s darkest hours into one of our greatest triumphs. Gracias, “Paul Heyman tipo”!

5 Feuds Rey Mysterio SHOULD Have

Rey Mysterio has had some great matches and feuds throughout not only his WWE career, but his wrestling career in general. When you think of Rey’s best feuds, the names of Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Psicosis, CM Punk and many others are brought into the mix. However, there are many stars that Rey has yet to face. So, I thought it’d be interesting to put together a list of 5 Feuds Rey Mysterio Should Have, including how it could happen, why, and what would happen. Why: Without a doubt, Rey Mysterio is known as one of the best luchadors and Mexican superstars to hit the WWE roster in recent years. Hunico, who is a newcomer to the WWE but not wrestling, also dabbles around in lucha libre and is a Mexican superstar as well. What would be better than to see one of the most popular Mexican stars to go against a new and upcoming star? Hunico has stated in interviews that he is a fan of Rey and would love to face him one day. Also? Hunico was there to see Rey back when Rey was first starting out as Colibri. Hunico can fly around just as much as Rey, but can also hit the mat with his amateur wrestling background. Hunico can keep up with Rey and ground him at the same time.

How it Could Happen: Rey could cut a promo how it’s been an honor to face some of the people in the back. He thanks the fans for being around and says that he’s honored to be such a large house hold name. Mid-sentence, Hunico’s theme music hits and he walks down towards the ring. He then pulls out his heel tactics saying that “Rey’s time is over and it’s time the fans look up to someone new, like himself.” Hunico can also say that it’s time for Rey to move on and retire and let the new blood run around. This can lead to a feud between the two after Hunico attacks Rey in the ring, only to allow Rey to get the upper hand. Then after, Hunico would interfere in all of Rey’s matches, take him out backstage and cut promos about his time being up.

What could happen: Not only would Hunico be put on the map as a large name now, he could move on from the feud and be taken seriously as a future title contender. Hunico could move on to Alberto del Rio or Jack Swagger and build up his feud credentials. Not to mention, Rey and Hunico would put on PHENOMENAL matches together. They could definitely pull out some show stealing matches as they could handle each other’s ring style well.

Feud Expectation: A+ These two would not disappoint and I can only imagine the promos and matches they could have.

Why: Ever since Sin Cara has entered the WWE, the main thing on everyone’s minds in regards to him is “when is he going to face Rey Mysterio?” Both have high flying backgrounds and come from the rings of Mexico. Sin Cara and Rey can pull out the same moves and styles as one another and can definitely handle each other in the ring.
How it Could Happen: Rey and Sin Cara can come back as a tag team, only to be a losing tag team. One of them could turn on each other and say that “it’s your fault we keep losing.” Personally, I think it would be cool to have Rey turn on Cara and give Rey an attitude like he had in 2002 with his feud against Kurt Angle and keep him as a fan favorite. Then have Sin Cara say that he’s sick of being a team and needs to be on his own, only to attack Rey from behind in a match.

What Could Happen: Some seriously good matches. Ever since Cara has begun to work with Rey he sure has improved handling his style in WWE’s ring that working against Rey could only benefit him even more. Rey would be able to land tons of spots and would be able to spot for Cara as well. I think they would do good and should definitely do an extreme lucha match as well.

Feud Expectation: B+ These two would definitely put on a good feud, but only if Sin Cara would be able to cut promos against Rey. The promos help aid to the feud and if Cara can’t speak English well enough, no one will be interested in what he’s saying.

Why: Dean Ambrose is the current US Champion and the hottest thing to come into the ring as of lately. No doubt about it, he’s the star of the Shield. Rey has never held the US title, despite having a shot at it before. A feud between a future leader of WWE and one of the top stars would definitely be something good to see.

How it Could Happen: Dean Ambrose could take on a lot of wrestlers and continue to win match after match. Then, he could cut a promo on how there isn’t anyone he’s faced that he can’t beat and for a REAL wrestler to come out. All of a sudden, a returning Rey Mysterio’s music hits and he walks down the ramp with a microphone saying that “he hasn’t forgotten that the Shield took him out in February 2013 and that he wants his revenge and that title.” Wam-bam, fablam, a feud begins with Rey and Dean after the US Title.

What Could Happen: Rey could win the US title only to lose it to Dean in the end and help elevate Dean’s career. They would put on some good matches as Dean is more aggressive in the ring and would pair nicely against Rey’s high flying ways. Dean could demolish Rey in the ring as Rey refuses to quit and continue to keep his Underdog status. Ultimately, Dean should be the winner of the feud, taking his US title away in victory.

Feud Expectation: A , Rey and Dean would put on some great matches and I can only imagine the things they would say to one another in promos. However, the thought of the Shield always getting in the way takes away the A+

Why: Tyson Kidd is an upcoming star who has the in-ring ability to put on a phenomenal match. Rey and Tyson have faced off before and they worked well together, however, they have never had a feud against one another. Rey VS. Tyson would be a great match of the underdogs and Tyson could even bring Natalya back in his corner and have her interfere in their matches!

How it Could Happen: Tyson could say how he finds Rey as an inspiration (he’s said it after their 2012 Survivor Series Match) and how he would love to take him on one on one. Rey could get the victory which would upset Tyson and make him want to take Rey on again, only for Rey to win once more. Then, as Rey shakes Tyson’s hand after the match, Tyson turns on Rey and begins the feud of the workhorse vs. the ultimate underdog.

What Could Happen: Tyson is not only a great mat-technician, but he too can fly like Rey. Those two would definitely keep the fans entertained especially if they’re given a good amount of time to perform.

Feud Expectation: A- The two would put on killer matches and it would be great to see Rey feud against someone as talented and determined as Tyson.

Why: Why not? Daniel Bryan is mega talented and is one of the hottest stars right now. He’s not the biggest and not the strongest but he sure is one of the best in-ring workers WWE has at the moment. Him and Rey have faced off before and the match they have had were phenomenal including the corner 619 Rey did to him in February 2013.

How it Could Happen: Since Daniel Bryan has lost his tag team title as of recently, he’s been a little angry. What better way to take it out than on a returning Rey Mysterio? Rey could win his return match and then Daniel’s music hits and he comes to the ring. He could pretend to welcome Rey back, only to turn on him and betray him.

What Could Happen: Sick matches, for sure. Rey and Daniel worked well the last time they faced one another and I’m sure they could do it all over again.

Feud Expectation: A+ Daniel is great at what he does, just like Rey. I imagine both of them would give it they’re all and would be an excellent way to keep the fans entertained with a non-title related feud.

News on Rey’s Injury and When Is Rey Coming Back?

Rey Mysterio took to his twitter account today (@ReyMysterio) to post about his injury and a projected return date. Rey said that he hopes to be back by late August after having to have a small procedure done. He tweeted:

Great news today with Doc Andrews! Revisit on the 19th of June for a minor procedure and still trying to b back in the ring by late August! Should know more by my Nxt visit! I LUV to all & again THX for all the Prayers & Luv! blessings! back to the 619!

Whatever happens, I’m sure all of us 619ers wish him a great recovery and sure can’t wait to see him back!

WWE.com recently posted a brand new article today entitled “The 20 Most Amazing Masked Wrestlers,” where they look at, well, the 20 most amazing masked wrestlers. Of course Rey Mysterio was featured, making it to #2, only 1 spot short of being #1 (which belongs to the legendary Mil Mascaras). [VIDEO] New Rey Mysterio Interview

Thanks to Anne from Stu-Bennett.Com for passing along this great Rey Mysterio interview with Tercera Caida. Of course, Rey is speaking Spanish as he promotes WrestleMania 29. (The video was shot at Axxess). Although I’m not fluent in Spanish, I got a small piece of what Rey was saying. Skip to 5:53 to see Rey Mysterio speak. Rey talks about him being out with an injury right now and rehabilitation and that the first thing that’s important is his health… The interviewer asks Rey something about Sin Cara and Rey talks about wrestling and their Mexican heritage…. Later on, Mick Foley brings up wrestling Rey in 1994 (Hey, that’s when I was born! ) and how it was a great match. Watch the video, you’ll love it!
