In a new post, WWE takes a look at the 25 Most Personal grudges that has happened. Of course, you cannot make a list about grudges without mentioning Rey Mysterio VS. Eddie Guerrero from 2005. WWE posted”
Had it not been for the trail blazed by Eddie Guerrero, the WWE Universe may have never known about “The King of Mystery,” Rey Mysterio. When Mysterio was a teenaged Superstar-in-the-making cutting his teeth in Mexico’s wrestling scene in the early 1990s, Eddie Guerrero had already established himself as one of lucha libre’s premier talents. Guerrero would go on to thrill fans stateside in ECW and WCW before making his way to the ultimate pinnacle of sports-entertainment, WWE. If that trail to WWE glory sounds familiar, it might be because Mysterio followed the exact same route, only lagging by about a year.
Inevitably, their paths crossed. The first time it happened in the U.S. was in WCW, where Mysterio and Guerrero squared off for the prestigious but now-defunct Cruiserweight Championship. Their five-star classic at Halloween Havoc 1997 is still raved about today. That, however, was a competitive match between two world-class athletes. It’d be several more years before the personal nature of their rivalry would be made abundantly clear.
In 2005, Latino Heat and The Ultimate Underdog paired up to become a successful duo, winning the WWE Tag Team Championship. However, after Guerrero left Mysterio high and dry during a title-losing effort against MNM, Guerrero’s darker feelings toward Mysterio showed through. Soon thereafter, Guerrero began taunting his former pal with the threat of revealing an embarrassing secret, which turned out to be that Guerrero was the biological father of Rey’s son Dominick. (Years earlier, Mysterio and his wife, Angie, had trouble conceiving, and in an agreement with Guerrero, they adopted Dominick as a baby.)
Before long, Guerrero hung over Mysterio’s head a new promise: to take back custody of Dominick. With the threat of losing his son staring him in his masked faced, Mysterio took to battle Guerrero at SummerSlam 2005 in a Ladder Match in which the winner would be named Dominick’s legal guardian. The Master of the 619 prevailed, thanks to interference by Vickie Guerrero, and the Mysterio household was restored.
